What is a forward deployed engineer? (And what it is not)

A forward deployed engineer works inside the customer's business, builds in their real systems and stays to improve what ships. Here is what the role means in practice.

If you hire a forward deployed engineer, you are not hiring someone to take a specification and disappear for six weeks. You are hiring someone who sits inside your problem, learns how your business really runs, builds in your own systems, and is still there after launch to make it better.

The short version

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer whose workplace is the customer's world rather than a product team's backlog. The "forward" means close to the front line: the shop floor, the support inbox, the spreadsheet that quietly runs the company. The goal is a working solution in the customer's real environment, not a demo in a clean one.

What the work looks like day to day

  • Listening first. Watching how orders, bookings, payments and handovers actually happen, including the workarounds nobody wrote down.
  • Building where the data lives. Integrations with the CRM, ERP, WhatsApp, the database that already exists, instead of asking the business to move into a new tool.
  • Shipping small and often. Short cycles that end with something a real person uses, then adjusting from what they say.
  • Staying on. Monitoring, fixing, improving. Software that works on launch day and rots by March is not finished.

What it is not

An FDE is not a freelancer who ships a ticket and vanishes, and not a consultant who delivers a slide deck.

It is also not a support role. The job is engineering: designing systems, writing code, deciding trade-offs. The difference is where the engineering happens and who it is accountable to. Accountability here means the customer's outcome, not the engineer's sprint velocity.

When a business needs one

You tend to need this kind of engineer when the problem is tangled up with how your business operates, and a generic product will not fit without changes. Typical signs:

  • Your process is the competitive advantage, and off-the-shelf software forces you to change it.
  • You have several systems that should talk to each other and do not.
  • You want AI to do real work, like answering customers or chasing documents, and it must use your actual data and rules.
  • You tried a project with an outside team and the result was technically fine but did not fit how people work.

How to tell it is the real thing

Ask three questions. What will you learn about my business before you write code? Which of my existing systems will you build inside? And what happens after launch? A real forward deployed engineer has concrete answers to all three, and they involve your people, your tools and a plan to stay on.

That is how I work. If you want to see what it looks like in practice, read the field reports or tell my agent about your problem on the home page.
